Tips to avoid heat stress while hot weather running:
In addition to wearing cooling apparel, the following advice will help you avoid heat stress while hot weather running.
1. Avoid the peak heat
Run in the early morning or in the evening to avoid the mid-day heat.
2. Stay hydrated & replenish electrolytes
According to Active Running, “dehydration is arguably the single most preventable impedance to running performance”. To avoid dehydration it is important to drink at least 8 oz. of water every one to two hours on your run. Consider wearing a hydration pack like our GULPZ personal hydration system, while you run. Or alternatively plan your routes around water sources (drinking fountains or stores where you can refill your water).
During hot weather running you will typically sweat more than normal, and therefore lose more electrolytes. In addition to replenishing water, make sure to get your electrolytes. You can try a mix of half Gatorade and half water.
3. Acclimate yourself
With the weather becoming hotter, be careful with your running. When running in the heat acclimatize yourself, by building up the distance of your runs to get used to the heat. Don’t just jump into a long run! For more information about heat acclimatization see this article by Tawnee Prazak / Running Competitor.
4. Plan your route
When hot weather running take the time to look for a shady trail instead of running in direct sunlight.
5. Block the sun
Make sure to wear sunscreen, and to apply it liberally. And consider wearing a HyperKewl Cooling Cap, to block the sun from hitting your face, as well as providing cooling relief.
6. Watch carefully for signs of heat stress
Even the most experienced runners with the best planning and hydration strategies can make mistakes by either timing their runs wrong or running longer than they should. That’s why when hot weather running, you need to constantly monitor your body to ensure that you’re keeping cool. Your body will send you signals if it’s having trouble with the heat, these may include:
- extreme fatigue,
- flushed or pale skin,
- heavy sweating
If you experience any of these symptoms, stop running, find some shade to lay down in, and replenish your fluids.
Be safe while hot weather running! Run smartly and safely, by following the above advice and wearing cooling vests and cooling accessories for runners.
